Energy Condition of Subsistence‐Harvested Fishes in Arctic Coastal Lagoons
نویسندگان
چکیده
In Arctic Alaska, Indigenous and rural residents depend on wild-harvested foods for sustenance the subsistence lifestyle is integral to their culture. Marine diadromous fishes, which often occupy coastal lagoon habitats, are relied upon harvest, particularly Pacific salmon, whitefishes (Coregoninae), cods (Gadidae), flounder species (Pleuronectidae). However, little research has been conducted that assesses energetic condition of these harvested by tens thousands annually. The effects accelerating climate change human development metabolic rates, diet, body condition, energy density fish great concern because will, in turn, affect people who food security. Consequently, we characterized percentage lipid, water, protein content 10 four lagoons within Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Alaska. We found whitefishes, Bering Cisco Coregonus laurettae Least C. sardinella exhibited highest density, content, significantly greater than marine cod species, Fourhourn Sculpin Myoxocephalus quadricornis, freshwater Pond Smelt Hypomesus olidus, values from other regional have published literature. Additionally, when relative mean abundance weight each was taken into account, total value availability compared with taxa Smelt. Given impending construction region, it will be important monitor fishes ensure quality harvesters.

Metagenomes of Mediterranean Coastal Lagoons
Coastal lagoons, both hypersaline and freshwater, are common, but still understudied ecosystems. We describe, for the first time, using high throughput sequencing, the extant microbiota of two large and representative Mediterranean coastal lagoons, the hypersaline Mar Menor, and the freshwater Albufera de Valencia, both located on the south eastern coast of Spain. We show there are considerable...
متن کاملBiodiversity and Conservation of Coastal Lagoons
Wetlands are sites of high biodiversity and productivity (Mitsch & Gosselink, 2000). They provide essential services, such as maintenance of atmosphere composition, key habitats for migratory species, and important nursery areas (Basset & Abbiati, 2004), but these ecosystems have suffered a serious decline worldwide due to human influence (Shine & Klemm, 1999; Solimini et al., 2008; Stenert & M...

BACKGROUND: Protozoa are common in poultry and otherbirds and can cause mild to severe disease. OBJECTIVES: Thisstudy was concerned with the prevalence of parasitic protozoa inwild waterfowl in Caspian sea lagoons in the North of Iran.METHODS:Atotal of 293 waterfowl belonging to various generaincluding Tadorna tadorna (common shelduck),Aythya fuligula(Tufted duck), Aythya ferina (Common puchard...
متن کاملControls of Sediment Nitrogen Dynamics in Tropical Coastal Lagoons.
Sediment denitrification rates seem to be lower in tropical environments than in temperate environments. Using the isotope pairing technique, we measured actual denitrification rates in the sediment of tropical coastal lagoons. To explain the low denitrification rates observed at all study sites (<5 μmol N2 m-2 h-1), we also evaluated potential oxygen (O2) consumption, potential nitrification, ...
متن کاملConcentrations of mercury (Hg) and cadmium (Cd), and the condition of some coastal Baltic fishes
Of eight main selected coastal fish species; Baltic sprat, herring, smelt, eelpout, four-horn sculpin, perch, flounder and turbot, five; herring, smelt, eelpout, four-horn sculpin, flounder, seem most suitable for heavy metal monitoring in coastal waters in the Norhern Baltic Sea. In general low concentrations of Hg and Cd were measured from the edible parts (muscle tissue) of the fishes. Preda...
